The fantasy series Game of Thrones is coming to the small screen as HBO picks up the pilot and nine additional episodes of the highly anticipated project. The show is based on George R.R. Martin's bestselling series of novels 'A Song Of Fire & Ice' and will be produced by David Benioff ('Troy'), D.B. Weiss ('Halo') and Guymon Casady ('Hope & Faith'). The title 'Game of Thrones' is the first novel in the series.
When the project was announced back in November, it generated an enormous online interest, which certainly helped in the decision of HBO to choose it over the 9 other projects it had lined up.
Game Of Thrones will tell the story of the noble Stark family in the mythical land of Westeros. When patriarch Eddard (played by Sean Bean) becomes the right-hand man of the king, the family gets caught up in the high court intrigue.
Unlike similar fantasy shows like Legend Of The Seeker and Merlin, this show won't rely on magic and instead goes for brutal realism. Martin is best known as writer for the television show Beauty And The Beast back in the last 80's. The show will start production in Belfast this June and is slated for a release in the spring of 2011.
