Review: Southland S02E01 - Phase Three

Southland's return to the airwaves with all-new episodes was subtle and stylish, like the show had never left us. But for a season premiere, that's not always pleasant. Waiting this long to find that absolutely nothing has changed, is rather a disappointment than a happy welcoming to a second season that doesn't let down from the first.

In the season two premiere that is called 'Phase Three', rookie Ben Sherman steps up the police ladder by ending his second phase in the force. To the dismay of his partner John Cooper, who leaves all the progression of last season behind and continues to act tough and distant. The two get involved in several cases when their colleague Chickie Brown deals with a new partner and a neighborhood riot and detective Lydia Adams is working on the case of a missing old man, while getting a new partner herself to replace Russell after he got shot in last years finale.

Southland still very much ups the level of a crime show today, by walking the line with rogue cops, digital media, the place of the police in the less glamorous parts of town, while also focusing on the repercussions of their actions. The problem is that the episode kind of sits back and shows the moral grey areas of being a cop, instead of letting us connect with the characters. But even at it's worse, the show is still a good hour of television, that obviously fits better on network TV. The only question that remains; how long before this will all be over?
