Review: Community S01E17 - Physical Education

If you like naked guys playing pool, this episode is yours for the taking. If not, this week's Community was disappointing and below average. With little to no original jokes and barely enough character defining moments, it felt like nothing the show has produced before. Let's hope it was a one week downer, and the old wise-crackin' Jeff and company will be back soon.

Because let's face it, Jeff, Britta, even Pierce, are all at their best if they can make fun of each other with jokes that work well for their individual characters. Sure enough, there were some in this week's episode, but the continuing jokes, such as Britta's pronunciation of the word "bagel" or Abed finding a girlfriend, weren't really worth dealing with.
In 'Physical Education' Jeff wants to play pool, but to do so, he has to give up his "cool" outfits and dress in shorts, like an athlete. Meanwhile, the gang thinks someone has a crush on Abed and goes out of their way to make it happen.

If you want nothing more than your half-hour of laughs, Community went 'big' today in scenes and practical jokes, so it's very likely that there's something for you to enjoy. But looking at it long-term, this is not the kind of humor that fits with the show very well. A nice try, but perhaps something less ballsy next week?
