When Frankie is busy with her "promotion" and Mike gets excited because Brick won his school's spelling bee, they forget all about Sue's birthday. Trying to make up for their horrible act as parents, they let Sue make all the decisions on their road trip to Chicago for Brick's regional spelling bee. Bad adventures ensues.
The Middle isn't the kind of comedy that gets you rolling over the floor laughing (or 'rofl' as the kids stopped calling it years ago), but it's endearing, sweet and well, a tad hilarious. In 'The Bee' Axl really finds his comedy in sarcasm, mocking basically everything on the trip. Mike gets some nice scenes too while Brick (a great role by Atticus Shaffer) is funny by just being himself.
And even though the story was anything but original, I did like how it was waved in with the other story lines and how it ultimately came to a conclusion. Because that's what this show does. It has a slightly dysfunctional family, but it gives you a sense of family that many shows try to touch upon, but only a few succeed.
