Review: How I Met Your Mother S05E18 - Say Cheese

How I Met Your Mother probably owns the rights to comedy flashbacks and gets storytelling right in a way few other shows manage to. 'Say Cheese' has the ingredients of every HIMYM episode, funny side notes, hilarious Barney comments, an overexcited Marshall, Ted searching for love and a trip down memory lane. The last one takes home the award, with such a great look in the past even some of Ted's ex-girlfriends return to guest star just for flashback purpose only. Gotta love bigger budgets.

But saying that this episode is great because some old flames were there to fit the story that was being told would be wrong, it's just a tiny factor that makes this picture look great. How I Met Your Mother gets friends as family, and nostalgic moments and execs them perfectly.
This time it's Lily's birthday, leading to a story about her obsession of perfect group photo's. The only problem is, there's always a variable in those pictures; Ted's girlfriends.
And once again, what starts out as a fun anecdote turns into something serious, with comic relief, only to turn into a heartwarming and sweet ending.
After five seasons, How I Met Your Mother has come to a point where returning to the past involves stories we've already seen, and fitting them to the current story line is hard, but where other shows fail, this show gets it right. 'Say Cheese' is just another roller coaster ride through the history of the core five, but as a viewer, there's nothing more rewarding then seeing them fight, make right, and eventually, turn 42.
