Review: The Simpsons S21E15 - Stealing First Base

It goes without saying that the first five minutes of 'Stealing First Base' had 10x more sincerity and humor to it than the entire episode of Family Guy. I think The Simpsons is lifting me to a much higher form of animated humor and quality and I, for one, love it. In this week's episode, Bart gets a girlfriend, Lisa gets an F, many gay kisses are seen and Michelle Obama makes an appearance.

But first things first, the best story line is that of the kids. Lisa and Bart still struggling with the same things every kid, and every viewer can relate to. It's powerful to see these standard things worked out in a way that's true to these characters and can still be fresh. Bart meets a girl that is a good match for him, but the focus isn't on the fact he gets a girlfriend or even that he kisses her (which eventually leads to a good 'ol rule that prevents any lip-contact), but that she's a girl, and he's confused.
Lisa faces an F, which, probably has been done before, but now we get a quick peep at Lisa being popular because she's no longer "gifted".
In both scenario's there's place for some guy on guy action between two memorable characters of Bart's school (no, Millhouse is not one of them) and a visit from the First Lady herself (but not voiced by her).

Touching upon kid problems, but still having quick, smart jokes that don't distract from any story, but push it to a whole new level, and The Simpsons is one of the best shows out there. I'm just surprised it keeps surprising me every week.
