Parenthood S03E01 - I Don't Want To Do This Without You

The Bravermans are back in the same emotional yet compelling matter to which we are accustomed.
Moving on from the fact that the adult Bravermans don't have friends, Sarah's birthday party was just a nice excuse to get the clan back together. As forced and awkward as the moments might feel, it's a lot more satisfying seeing this family making a fool of themselves and having fun than seeing your own do the same. That's exactly where the power of the show comes from.
It's infinitely relatable yet that much more soapy than you ever wish you family to be. In the season premiere Adam pushes the boundaries of nuance as he still hasn't found a job and actually has trouble with Julia being the provider of the family. Amber is actually growing up and moving out in one of the easiest moves in television history. Haddie and Alex are still going strong, perhaps a little too strong as Alex soon finds himself in trouble for bashing someone's head. Yes, drama has come all around once more in the Braverman clan, just as we expect it to.
The problem for me is that the Bravermans complain more about what happens to them than TV critics do about bad episodes, which is just unacceptable.I'm not too confident that I'll continue the show through it's third season (and considering the ratings, I'm not alone) but the premiere was a solid one. Every character played its part and got a moment to be honest and true. The show hasn't lost its touch with reality nor its sense for over-the-top drama and chaotic conversations. The sense of realism is both the greatest and worst aspect of the show and this episode delivers perfectly in that respect. A treat for the fans, but I don't know how big of a fan I actually am.
