Revenge S01E03 - Betrayal

In its third week the show has found its weekly formula to work from but it's not the lasting kind.
Much of the suspense Revenge has to offer comes from the series opening scene which takes place in the future. The idea that we've seen much of what's to come making the unraveling story lines a lot less intriguing. Like you're watching a painter work even though you've seen the final result.

Luckily there's more story to draw from as the mystery of what happened to Emily's father unfolds. Not so fortunate is the slew of participants in his demise that are introduced on a weekly basis. It reduces the feeling that this is a very tight nit show that has a descent plan that is being drawn out in front of our eyes. By only knowing Emily's "victims" from the start of an episode to the end, you aren't very interested in what happens to them. Perhaps it would work differently if there was more effort put into Emily's working ways, but instead we often know how she does by a one-sentence-explenation.
Far more interesting are the characters that are doomed. Victoria's son (still don't know his name) for instance, is a ticking time bomb and after a couple of weeks of being the golden boy, this week's episode revealed a darker past. But again, how much would we care if his faith hadn't already been decided?
Victoria herself, however, is a different case. Introduced as the main villain and undoubtedly the larger target of Emily's avenging hunt, she is suddenly a lot more accessible. She even slightly feels like a victim in her own world, largely because of her love for Emily's father. If anything, I'm staying to see where her story is going and how it ultimately doesn't end well either.
Because the ending is so clear and the weekly distractions aren't very attracting, the show is walking an edge. Though there's some promise that we'll focus more on the main characters and their roles in the story later on, I'm not really looking forward to what Emily's wicked plan is for next week. Not, unless she actually gets wicked.
