Review: Parenthood S01E02 - Man Vs. Possum

In the second episode, Parenthood doesn't shy away from story lines that have been explored on TV before, forced family time and no sincerity at all. There's potential, but aside from Graham, Christensen, Shephard and the kids, there's not much going on.

Because Parenthood does have strong suits. Lauren Graham for example knocks every scene out of the park. Christensen got some more screen time and used it well in an recognizable and awkward, daily story, while Shepard has a more interesting story line over the long haul that could be nice to see play out. The problem is, there's a bigger cast than just them.

Chasing possum, setting up jobs for someone else, smoking pot, it has all been done before, so many times, and so much better, that you wonder how it can be remotely interesting to write/shoot/act this, let alone put it on prime time television. Now, if the rest would give some diversity, but it's mostly just talk. Family talking about how family is, in an bigger version of itself. Even with the surprising Asperger story line, there's not much progress.

Still, it's the second episode, and things could look up soon and it's not like I don't want to like it, I just can't. Hopefully it will improve soon, but this might just be the end for my experience with parenthood for a while.
